Course
Starts on Cherry Street in downtown Black Mountain and finishes at Lake Tomahawk. Both fields climb together on mountain trail to the Blue Ridge Parkway overlook at mile 13; the marathon turns there while the 36-mile Challenge carries on to the summit of Mount Mitchell. Cupless aid stations, six on the marathon and ten on the Challenge.

The Mount Mitchell Challenge climbs from Black Mountain to the summit of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi, then returns the same way. The companion Black Mountain Marathon covers the out-and-back's first half. Steep, technical trail and forest service road make this one of the toughest mountain races in the Southeast.
