Course
The half marathon is an out-and-back with minimal time on the road, starting at the school gate and climbing through native bush and farm tracks towards Mt Fyffe, crossing creeks before turning at Waimangaroa Dam. The 12km follows the first 7km of the same route; the 5km stays on gentler farm track. Drink stations are set out on course.

The Kaikōura Whale Run is an annual run/walk with a half marathon, 12km and 5km fun run and walk plus a kids 2km race. The event began life in the school grounds of Kaikōura Suburban School as the Kaikōura Suburban Half Marathon.
