The Kanakuri Cup Tamana Half Marathon honors Shizo Kanakuri, the 'father of the Japanese marathon' and 1912 Olympian, who was born in Tamana. Held annually in his hometown in Kumamoto Prefecture, the race draws runners from across Kyushu each spring.
